Arbuckle Mountain Area Quail Unlimited Chapter Takes Flight

The Arbuckle Mountain Area Quail Unlimited chapter was formed in Ardmore on Oklahoma’s opening day of quail season. “The group of habitat oriented conservationists, hunters and sportsmen is taking flight with a unique slogan that summarizes their mission: Feet on the ground, hands on the equipment and birds in the air;” commented Bob Peterson, Quail Unlimited Central Plains Regional Director. “Additionally, the chapter members are in the initial stages of launching an ambitious habitat project that will benefit quail, wildlife and the general public in the Ardmore area.”

“Six months ago I wouldn’t have believed that I’d be here now heading-up a Quail Unlimited (QU) Chapter,” said Chris Cowlbeck, new chapter chairman of the Arbuckle Mountain Area QU Chapter. “I entered the Adopt-A-Covey contest that QU and Budweiser were promoting just to get the attractive, red, tin plaque (sign), but now I’m excited to say that it’s leading to many interesting opportunities for quail conservation in our area.”

Chris was recently named the Quail Unlimited Central Plains Regional winner of the QU/Budweiser Adopt-A-Covey contest/cooperative landowner program. His property was selected out of several entries from his region. Nearly 300 landowners enrolled in the program nationwide. “The Adopt-A-Covey program is a small way to recognize landowners for the wildlife management they have done and continue to do on their land,” stated Peterson.

The new chapter’s vision is to increase a sustainable wild population of bobwhite quail on a landscape basis for the Southern Central Oklahoma counties of Carter, Love, Murray, Johnston and Marshall. Their focus will be habitat improvement projects and communicating to the local citizens the necessary management techniques for bobwhite quail, applicable to their region. They anticipate working closely with local wildlife agencies and foundations.

Conservation-minded individuals, sportsmen and wildlife enthusiasts interested in taking an active part in securing the future of the northern bobwhite quail and other upland game birds in the Arbuckle Mountain area are encouraged to become a part of this habitat-oriented Quail Unlimited chapter.
